The answer: Yes temporarily, and for a specific neurological reason. But the anxiety quitting causes is smaller than the anxiety smoking was causing, and it resolves while smoking’s anxiety contribution does not.
What causes the anxiety after quitting
Nicotine stimulates norepinephrine- the brain’s primary alerting and arousal molecule. Over years of regular use, the brain calibrated its own norepinephrine system around nicotine as a consistent input. When nicotine stops, the arousal system is temporarily dysregulated thereby producing a restless, edgy, unfocused state that the brain interprets as anxiety.
Simultaneously, the brain’s GABA system (the primary inhibitory, calming neurotransmitter system) was partially supported by nicotine’s indirect effects. Without it, the balance between excitation and inhibition shifts slightly toward excitation. The nervous system runs slightly hotter than usual until the recalibration completes.
This is withdrawal anxiety. Real, physiological, and temporary. It peaks in the first week and resolves within two to four weeks for most people.
The important paradox: smoking was causing more anxiety than it relieved
Nicotine’s apparent anxiety-relieving effect was almost entirely the relief of nicotine withdrawal, not the relief of genuine anxiety. A non-smoker under identical stress does not experience the additional layer of withdrawal-driven anxiety that a smoker between cigarettes does.

What to do during withdrawal anxiety
