The answer: Yes, but not as your primary reason, and not as the weight you carry every time the craving fires. Quitting for your children is a powerful initiator. It is a poor sustainer.
Why children are a powerful reason to start
The motivation produced by a child’s wellbeing, a child’s explicit request, or the acute awareness of secondhand smoke exposure is real, emotionally charged, and capable of producing the commitment needed to begin a quit attempt. It gets people to day one more reliably than abstract health statistics do.
This is valuable. Use it.
Why it weakens under pressure
Motivation sourced from external relationships is vulnerable to the emotional complexity of those relationships. The child who asked you to quit is also the child who just had a tantrum. The family you are quitting for is also the family producing the stress that activates the smoking circuit most powerfully.
When the craving fires at peak intensity under stress, in a moment of frustration, in a context where the family itself is the stressor, your “I’m doing this for my children” competes directly with the emotional state the children are producing. The external motivation and the internal craving are in the same space at the same time. The craving often wins.
What sustains cessation beyond the initial reason
The reason that carries you through month three is not the same reason that got you to day one. What sustains cessation past the point where external motivation fluctuates is the accumulating internal evidence that life without smoking is genuinely better, with lower baseline stress, improved physical capacity, and the growing identity of someone who doesn’t smoke.
This is motivation the process generates, not motivation imported from outside. It compounds. It doesn’t fluctuate with the state of the relationship that originally supplied it.
The one thing to hold onto
Quit for your children if that is what gets you to day one.
Then quit for yourself, because that is the reason that will still be present on the hardest day of month two, when the children are loud, and the craving is louder.
Both reasons are real. Only one of them travels into every moment.
