The biological rhythms that amplify cravings
The cortisol awakening response. The largest cortisol surge of the day occurs within 30 minutes of waking, producing the sharpest amplification of craving of any natural daily event. Cortisol sensitizes the dopamine reward pathway, making cue-triggered cravings fire harder and faster than in a neutral hormonal state. This is why the morning craving is pharmacologically distinct from every other craving of the day, as it arrives in the highest-cortisol window, into a receptor system depleted by overnight nicotine absence.
The afternoon energy dip. Circadian biology produces a natural decline in alertness and energy in the early to mid-afternoon- typically between 2 pm and 4 pm. What this means for cessation
The timing of the worst cravings is not random; it is predictable from the body’s own daily rhythms. This predictability is an advantage: the morning window, the post-meal window, the afternoon dip, and the evening depletion can all be mapped in advance and prepared for specifically.
