Nothing has gone wrong. The process is working exactly as the neuroscience says it should.
Here is what actually happens.
What “going away” looks like biologically
The smoking circuit does not get deleted. It gets quieted.
The neural pathways built through years of smoking do not disappear when you quit; they weaken. The synaptic connections that made the cue-craving-smoking sequence automatic lose insulation, lose efficiency, lose the hair-trigger sensitivity that made them fire so reliably. By one year, most people report cravings as occasional, mild, and brief, which are easily named and waited out.

For most people who sustain cessation, that threshold is crossed within the first year. What lies beyond it is not the permanent absence of every trace but the freedom from the circuit’s control.
That is what going away completely means in practice. Not silence. Irrelevance.
What this means for where you are right now
If you are in the early weeks, the intensity you are experiencing is the circuit at its noisiest. It will not stay this loud. The noise is the evidence that the extinction process has begun.
