The answer: You are probably not going to feel ready before you quit. Readiness is not a feeling that precedes the attempt, it is a state that the attempt itself produces.
What readiness actually feels like
Most people waiting to feel ready are waiting for a specific internal state- certainty, confidence, the absence of ambivalence, a felt sense that this time will be different. This state arrives occasionally, briefly, following a health scare or a moment of clarity, and fades within days as the motivational peak subsides and the circuit reasserts its influence.
Waiting for that feeling to arrive and stay is waiting for something the addiction is specifically designed to prevent from staying. The circuit that generates cravings also generates the comfortable ambivalence that makes the readiness feeling unstable. Waiting for readiness is, in many cases, the circuit’s most effective long-term defense.
The signals that matter- not feelings, but conditions
Readiness is better assessed through conditions than feelings. The conditions that predict a successful quit attempt are specific and buildable, not dependent on a feeling arriving spontaneously.
A specific quit date within two weeks. Not “soon” but a date. The person who has chosen a date is more ready than the person who feels certain but has no date, because the date converts intention into a structural commitment that persists beyond the motivational state that produced it.
Environmental preparation completed. Tobacco removed from the home, car, and workplace. The person whose environment has been prepared is more ready than the person who feels ready but still has cigarettes in the drawer.
The craving protocol decided. A specific, pre-decided response to the first craving- exhale, name it, change the environment, set a timer exists before the first craving arrives. The person with a protocol is more ready than the person with resolve but no plan.
High-risk situations mapped. The three situations most likely to produce the strongest cravings, each with a specific pre-decided response. The person who knows where the attempt is most likely to fail and has prepared for it specifically is more ready than the person who is confident but unprepared.
One person told. The commitment that exists in one other person’s awareness. The person who has told someone is more ready than the person who has decided privately.
The ambivalence question
Many people interpret ambivalence about quitting as evidence that they are not ready. Some ambivalence about quitting is normal, and present in virtually every successful quit attempt at some point. A person who has no ambivalence is unusual. The person who acts despite ambivalence is the one who quits.
Ambivalence is not the opposite of readiness. It is the normal condition of a person who genuinely wants to quit and is also physically dependent on the substance they are trying to stop using. Both things are simultaneously true. Readiness does not require the resolution of that tension; it requires the decision to act within it.
The one reliable readiness signal
Not a feeling. A decision specifically, the decision to set a quit date in the next two weeks and begin the preparation that the date requires.
That decision, made and acted on, is readiness. Everything else with the certainty, the confidence, the absence of ambivalence follows the attempt, not precedes it.
The feeling of readiness that most people are waiting for arrives, reliably, after the first craving is survived. Not before. The attempt produces the feeling. The feeling does not produce the attempt.
The one thing to hold onto
You will not feel ready before you quit.
You will feel ready after the first craving passes without a cigarette because that moment proves the method works, and proof is what readiness is actually made of.
Set the date. Build the preparation. The readiness follows.
