The answer: That is an honest position, and it deserves an honest response. Not a lecture, not shame, and not a list of reasons you should feel differently than you do.
What enjoying smoking actually means, mechanistically
The enjoyment is real. It is also, in significant part, the relief of withdrawal which the brain experiences as pleasure because the contrast between discomfort and its resolution registers as reward. This does not make the enjoyment fake. It makes it pharmacologically constructed in a way that most people who enjoy smoking have never had explained to them clearly.
The cigarette that feels genuinely pleasurable is producing that pleasure partly by relieving the discomfort the previous cigarette created. A non-smoker smoking the same cigarette at the same moment does not experience the same pleasure because they have no withdrawal to relieve. The enjoyment is real. Its source is different from what it feels like.
This is not an argument that you should quit. It is information about what the enjoyment is made of, which you are entitled to have, regardless of what you decide to do with it.
On not wanting to quit
Not wanting to quit is a legitimate position. Adults make decisions about risk and pleasure constantly, and smoking is one of them. The decision to continue smoking, made with full information about what smoking is and what it costs, is yours to make.
What is worth examining is whether the “not wanting to quit” is genuinely a considered preference or whether it is partly the circuit protecting itself. The addiction reliably produces the feeling of not wanting to stop. That feeling is real, but it is also one of the mechanisms of dependency. Distinguishing between genuine preference and circuit-generated reluctance is difficult from inside the experience.
What full information looks like
Not wanting to quit is most ‘free’ when it is based on an accurate understanding of what the enjoyment actually is, what the long-term trajectory of continued smoking looks like physically, and what quitting would actually involve, which is not the willpower-based version that most people attempt, but the circuit-based version that addresses the problem where it lives.
After understanding the mechanism clearly, many people who believed they didn’t want to quit actually discovered that what they didn’t want was the version of quitting they had previously experienced. That version had the deprivation, the white-knuckling, the indefinite resistance. They were not attached to smoking. They were attached to not going through that version again.
The one thing to hold onto
You don’t owe anyone a quit attempt.
But you do deserve accurate information about what the enjoyment is, what the dependency is, and what quitting actually involves, so that whatever you decide is genuinely yours, and not the circuit’s decision wearing your voice.
