Magnesium depletion. Smoking is associated with lower circulating magnesium levels, and magnesium deficiency is a well-established cause of muscle twitching. As the body’s magnesium balance adjusts after cessation, the transition period can produce twitching in muscles that are particularly sensitive to magnesium fluctuation, the eye muscles being among the most sensitive.
