The answer: You have not tried everything. You have tried everything you knew about at the time, which is a different statement, and a more accurate one.
What “tried everything” actually means
Multiple attempts using willpower, possibly NRT, possibly cold turkey- each ending in relapse at a specific point, for a specific reason, that was never fully identified or addressed.
It does not mean the mechanism of cessation has been exhausted. It means the approaches tried so far have not addressed the problem at the level where it actually lives, which is the behavioral circuit.
What every failed attempt produced
Not nothing. Each attempt extinguished some circuits, built some craving survival experience, and mapped some high-risk territory. The person who has tried ten times is not in the same position as someone on attempt one, if they use what the previous attempts revealed rather than dismissing it as failure history.
What is worth examining
Which specific cue won every time. Not “stress” generally- the exact event, person, or emotional state. A relapse that happens repeatedly at the same point is an unextinguished circuit meeting its trigger without a specific prepared response.
Whether the method has actually changed. If every attempt was willpower-based without behavioral methodology, the method has not changed. The outcome will not change.
Whether the behavioral circuit layer has been directly addressed. Most cessation tools address physical withdrawal. The cue-triggered circuit that outlasts withdrawal requires cue mapping, pre-decided craving responses, and extinction work. It is the layer most commonly left unaddressed and most commonly responsible for repeated relapse.
The one thing to hold onto
Every attempt ended at a specific point, for a specific reason, that is identifiable in retrospect.
That reason is the unfinished work, not proof that the work cannot be finished.
You have not tried everything. You have tried everything except the approach that addresses what specifically went wrong, every time, at the same point.
That approach exists. It is the next attempt informed by everything the previous ones revealed.
