At this stage of the evening, with alcohol in the bloodstream and the circuit firing hard, “just one won’t hurt, I’ve been clean for months” feels like a rational thought. It is not. One cigarette at this moment re-stimulates the full receptor network- the same network that needed weeks to quieten. The craving the next morning is not abstract. It is a full restart. There is no such thing as a social cigarette for a quitting smoker.

When the pressure feels genuinely irresistible- leave
This is a legitimate tactic, not a failure. If the combination of alcohol, social pressure, and the smoking environment has reached the point where the quit feels genuinely at risk: end the evening. Not dramatically- “I have to be up early” is a complete sentence. The quit is worth more than staying for the last hour. A quit that survives a slightly shorter evening is infinitely better than one that ends at 1 a.m.
